Narrative Writing
Children practised writing WALTS for narratives.
There were two problems that were in our classroom this week.
Problem 1: water spilt on desk
Problem 2: equipment is lost

We realised that narrative settings could be at school too. We brainstormed all the places around the school where settings could take place.

Settings were collated and Sydney and Jack took pictures around the school at the most popular places.

Characters - talking and learning partners

Problems - Three Cards
something or someone broken
something or someone found
something or someone lost

We then brainstormed the problem and resolution before we wrote the story in our books.

Narrative Example

Setting: SpiderWeb

Characters: Hugo and Sydney
Problem: Someone or something broken

Finally, Hugo and I were allowed to play on the spiderweb. I liked the feeling of the web. It felt like a cat’s tongue! Suddenly, I saw Hugo start to fall. Then quick as a flash I grabbed Hugo’s hand. The rough rope clung to my hand. Unfortunately, Hugo fell. I knew that noise would come on when he fell from the top. The noise was like a noisy elephant. Miss Campbell rang the doctor and the doctor said, “I will make him better.” Then the next day Hugo was better. Hugo didn’t want to go on the spiderweb again. I understood that indeed! By Sydney

Philosophy For Children

Did you know we have philosophers in room 18? 'Philosophy for Children' helps us to improve our oral language skills, form our own opinions and explain our ideas to peers.

An example....
Over the last couple of weeks we have been talking about 'The Door' By Miroslaw Holub

We talked about some of the words and phrases in the poem.

Some of us imagined what's behind the door and some of us wrote opinions about ideas we discussed in class.

I think a magic city would be floating in outer space and it would be made out of candy.Ethan

I think a magic city would have brontosaurs dinosaurs with little bumps on their bums. Sydney

I think a magical city is floating in the air, with people flying everywhere with clothes. Tui

After the earthquake I opened the door and there was no liquefaction in sight. Jack

When you open the door, you might see a green worm or a pink crocodile. Hannah

When you open the door you might see a humungous dressed up cloud. Michael

Sometimes I have been surprised by my dad opening the door because dad wasn't supposed to be home. Sydney

One day when I opened the door, I got a surprise when Gran and Poppa opened the door and gave me a present. Hannah

I think it is absolutely not possible to open the door because it might be locked. Jack

If I could not open the door, I would climb out the window and bring a screwdriver and open it with that. Maggie

If I could not open a door, I would ask my dad to get the chainsaw. Ethan

If I could not open the door I would get a knife and poke it through the side. Tui

I think that sometimes you will not know everything because your mum and dad don't know everything. Tui

Poetry Competition
Congratulations room 18. You all worked extremely hard to learn your poems. You all presented your poems beautifully. I was very impressed with how clearly you spoke with good speed and how some of you even had actions. Thank you to the families who came and supported their child and the class.

Celebrating Success

Improving Handwriting
Children Taking Ownership of their Learning

Pictures were taken of children who showed good posture and hand position for handwriting and these were discussed on the data projector as well as examples of handwriting in their books.

Using learning partners and whiteboards the children listed as many success criteria for excellent handwriting as they could.

Ideas were collated and split into two groups - what our body does and what should be on the page. They then selected their top two things to work on (one from each list) and discussed it with their learning partner.

Handwriting Success Criteria
Body
Chair is pushed in and sit up straight.
Feet are on the ground or hanging off the
chair.
One hand is lying on a page while the other
hand is writing.
Head is not on the page.
Hold pencil correctly.
Make sure your pencil is sharp.

Page
Letters are sitting on the line.
Letters are the same size.
Letters are formed correctly.
Consistent finger spacing.
